NEIL’S STORY

Neil grew up in Aberdeen, Scotland. He was a golf enthusiast and although he never quite realised his full potential on the golf course whilst in Scotland, when he got the opportunity to move to America, to be closer to his girlfriend, Jen, his employment at Waccabuc Country Club, New York State, changed things for him.

Jen, an event planner at Waccabuc, organised a greenkeeping position for Neil at the Club and Neil planned to take a year out to be closer to her. On weekdays, Neil was occupied with green keeping tasks but at the weekends he became involved with caddying for some of the Club’s affluent members. During the busy summer months an opportunity arose for Neil to caddie more frequently and he jumped at the chance.

Being a Scot was an advantage for Neil – it was a great ice breaker – and combined with his people skills helped him to get to know and befriend a number of the high-profile members. He got to know the course very well over the course of several months and built strong relationships with a number of members which didn’t go unnoticed by the Club’s owners. He was forging a reputation for himself!

Neil’s hard work and dedication was rewarded when he was offered a winter position at Jack Nicklaus’ Bear’s Club, in Jupiter, Florida. He took the role and began working at the prestigious venue, often rubbing shoulders with and caddying for the likes of Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Dustin Johnston and even Michael Jordan.

For a couple of seasons Neil honed and refined his skills between Waccabuc & The Bear’s Club and was in the process of beginning a career as a caddie on the European Tour. Having saved enough money from his time in the States, Neil took the decision to spend some time back at home with friends and family and arranged a golf trip to Portugal. Before he was due to leave for home, Neil was requested to take part in one last event at Sebonack Golf Club in The Hamptons. He accepted. Leaving the venue after having met with colleagues and club officials to get back to his living quarters, Neil set off on the 10 minute bike ride from the complex but was tragically struck by a drunk driver and killed almost instantly.

For those who knew Neil best, the news of his death was crushing. He is sorely missed by all who met and got to know him.

It is impossible to comprehend where Neil’s journey might have taken him but what’s not hard to believe is that he would have made the best possible go of it. So in May 2014, the decision by Neil’s Dad, Steve, and the family to create the Neil Fyfe Golf Foundation and donate proceeds through the Paul Lawrie Foundation seemed an appropriate way to honour his memory.

HISTORY & FUNDRAISING

Before Neil’s death he had planned a golf holiday to Portugal in October 2014 with friends. When Neil passed away in May 2014, his friends decided not to cancel the trip but to make it all about him. They commissioned a trophy in his honour and played for it.

The holiday was, naturally, one of mixed emotions but it was decided to make the trip an annual one. An idea was formed for the winners to bring the trophy back to Scotland and choose a venue at which to defend the Neil Fyfe Memorial Cup against all of Neil’s family and friends.

All proceeds from the event contribute towards the Neil Fyfe Golf Foundation and the continuous support has seen almost £25,000 raised to date from all of the golf days and events organised by his network of friends and relatives.

The following Event Blogs and Gallery will give you a good idea of the fun times we’ve had remembering our Son/Brother/Friend. Over the years since the initial funeral donation was pledged we’ve had various sponsored events, planned fundraisers and individuals donating through their own efforts. We’re immensely proud of what we’ve achieved in Neil’s honour.
